About Sri Lanka ...

The island of Sri Lanka, previously called "Ceylon", is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Known as "Serendip" in the Arabian region, the island was in control of Portuguese, Dutch and finally under the British rule. Sri Lanka is a republic in South Asia, located in about 31 kilometers off the southern coast of India. The location of the island is considered to be an strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia. The country has also been a center of Buddhism and the Sinhalese form the majority of the population. Meanwhile, Hinduism is also practiced here and the Tamils form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors (Muslims), Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the aboriginal Vedda people..

Sri Lanka is renowned for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconut, rubber and cinnamon - which is native to the country. The island is known as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean" due to its natural beauty. The sandy and white beaches here are so much attractive and among the top beaches in the world. The country is also filled with tropical forests, diverse landscapes with rich biodiversity. Sri Lanka claims to a long history of over three thousand years and it's one of the longest documented histories in the world. The rich cultural heritage and friendly people here, make Sri Lanka, as one of the greatest destinations to travel and enjoy the time.


Climate

The climate in Sri Lanka is tropical and warm. The country also experiences ocean winds and thus, considerable moisture. Raining season is slightly complicated with two monsoons. From May to August, the Yala monsoon brings rain to the south-western side of the island. Meanwhile, the dry season here starts from December and ends in March. North and East parts of the island experiences rainfall from October to January and dry weather from May to September. North and East parts of the island are comparatively dry with an average annual rainfall of 1000mm, while the south-west part experiencing the highest average rainfall of 4000mm annually.

The central highlands of the island, widely known as the "hill country" has the cooler climate with a mean temperature of about 16 °C (60.8 °F) where frost may occur for several days in the winter. Colombo - the capital city and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 28 °C (82.4 °F). The sea stays at 28 °C throughout the year.


Suitable time to visit

Sri Lanka is a place that has a friendly weather and celebrations throughout the year. That means you may visit the country whenever you would like. In a climatic view, the driest seasons are from the December to March (for the west coast, the south coast & for the hill country) and from April to September (for the region of ancient cities & for the east coast). Many visitors from the Europe tour here from December through March in order to escape from the winter season in the Europe.

The grand festival known as the "Kandy Esala Perahara (The Festival of Tooth)" is held in July / August in Kandy - the hill country. The festival is held in a very grand manner with elegant costumes. This has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka and thus a lots of tourists visit to enjoy the festival. This is a ten day festival along with the "Katharagama Perahara (Katharagama Festival)" in the south of Sri lanka. Please make sure you book the tour well in advance, as we could be able to reserve accommodation properly for you. Accommodation may be very hard to be found immediately before, during and immediately after these festivals.
